The Scraptacular Baskets - Crochet Pattern

Imagine yourself walking into an organised and clutter-free room, complete with our lovely and functional Scraptacular Baskets in every corner. These baskets will add a unique touch to your space, and are environmentally conscious creations, made from scrap yarn and designed to reduce waste. They will be a wonderful reminder of all of the beautiful projects that you have made, which lead you to have a pile of scrap yarn in the first place!

These scrap-busting crochet baskets would make a fabulous gift because they are not only beautiful, but functional and eco-friendly too. Whether you're looking for a unique gift for a friend or family member, or simply want to be environmentally conscious, these baskets are the perfect choice.

As you can see, I crocheted my Scraptacular Baskets (above) using the scraps left over from making my So Eggstra blanket - I grossly overestimated when buying the yarn lol. I used two strands of double knit yarn held together - the purple I used throughout, and the other strand consisted of yarn scraps held together using magic knots. I just love how they turned out :)

Pattern Instructions

  • I recommend that you read through the entire pattern before starting to ensure that you understand what to do at each stage. If at any point you get stuck or would like clarification, please feel free to reach out to us – we are always happy to help! Information on how to contact us can be found HERE.

  • Please note that this pattern is written in US crochet terms.

  • All stitches are to be worked into both loops, unless otherwise specified.

  • Ch1 does not count as a stitch.

  • This pattern is worked in a spiral. I strongly recommend that you use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch for each round. ONLY slip stitch at the end of a round when instructed.

  • If you are crocheting the scrappy version of this pattern I recommend using the magic knot (video tutorial available here) to join your scraps together. If you do this before you start you will be able to crochet the baskets faster.

  • Any stitch counts mentioned are based on the small basket featured at the start of this page, and so should be adjusted if you are making a bigger or smaller basket, using different weight yarn or a different size hook.

  • I recommend using the ‘yarn under’ (rather than the traditional ‘yarn over’) technique and holding the yarn double whilst crocheting this pattern, as this will create a denser fabric that holds its shape more easily.

  • If your ‘fabric’ is too floppy you can remedy this by:

    • Using a smaller crochet hook

    • Using thicker yarn

    • Using more strands of yarn

Small Size

Base

Make a magic ring.

Round 1 – ch1, 8sc into the ring. Slst into the 1st sc of the round (8)

Round 2 – ch1. *inc*, rpt *to* 7 times (16). DO NOT slst at the end of this round, continue round 3 in the next st – you are now working in a spiral.

Round 3 – *inc, sc*, rpt *to* 7 times (24)

Round 4 - *sc, inc, sc*, rpt *to* 7 times (32)

Round 5 - *inc, 3sc*, rpt *to* 7 times (40)

Round 6 - *2sc, inc, 2sc*, rpt *to* 7 times (48). Sl st into the 1st sc of the round to end the round.

Side

Round 7 – ch1. BLO sc into each stitch from round 6 (48).

Round 8 – sc into each st from round 7 (48)

Rounds 9-13 - rpt round 8.

Sl st into the 1st sc of the round to end round 13.

Rim

Round 14 – ch1. FLO sc into each st from round 13 (48)

Round 15 - sc into each st from round 14 (48)

Rounds 16-17 - rpt round 15.

Sl st into the 1st sc of the round to end round 17.

Fo and weave in your ends.

Use your fingers to shape your basket. The bottom circle should lie flat. The side should easily flip up where you placed the BLO sc and the rim should easily flip over at the round where you placed the FLO sc.
